The Vital Wave Story
Vital Wave Consulting was founded in 2005 when a small group of emerging-market-focused business managers from Hewlett-Packard's Emerging Market Solutions group saw an opportunity to provide research, advisory services, and implementation support to other multinational technology companies. The group, led by Brooke Partridge, shared a belief that emerging markets were more than just a backdrop for corporate social responsibility projects; they were a business imperative for companies that hoped to achieve increasing revenues in a world of convergence, commoditization, saturation, and hyper-connectivity.
At HP, and at other technology companies, it was clear that products and services made for developed countries did not necessarily transfer directly to emerging markets. It was also clear that business managers in many leading companies were unprepared for the challenging business environments of emerging markets. Weak infrastructure, limited electricity, telephone and Internet connectivity, political and regulatory hurdles, underdeveloped supply chains, and a dearth of trained personnel hampered the introduction or expansion of most technology products and services in developing countries. Vital Wave was created to help business managers understand and capture growing, albeit challenging, emerging markets, through the design and commercialization of appropriate, relevant products and services.
It soon became clear that other organizations could benefit from the firm's unique combination of emerging-market focus, technology expertise, and business rigor. Development organizations like the United Nations Foundation, the World Bank, the Gates Foundation, and others joined the list of clients. And shortly thereafter Vital Wave began expanding its industry focus beyond information technology and telecommunications. The company now works with corporations, foundations, international development agencies, and industry associations focused on health and pharmaceuticals, education, financial services, sustainable tourism, and agriculture.
Despite a stubborn recession in North America and Europe, Vital Wave has steadily expanded its services and industries, and added to its global network of analysts and field teams. The company has maintained a focus on emerging markets, while pursuing special initiatives in mServices, low-cost computing, women and development, and data analytics. After nearly a decade of successful engagements, it's safe to say that for organization working to grow their business or make a greater impact in emerging markets, there is no better partner than Vital Wave.
