Nutritional Self-Sufficiency for Rural Farmer Families
The Institute for Self-Reliant Agriculture (SRA) implements a progressive approach to self-sufficiency in agriculturally-fertile developing nations. SRA works in cooperation with international organizations, local governments, universities, NGOs, and others throughout the developing world to disseminate the Small-Scale Agriculture Family Self-Reliance Program. This program has been tested in many developing nations where village farmer families struggle with nutritional self-sufficiency and economic stability. We encourage farmers to grow what they eat to provide family nutrition first.
The Institute for Self-Reliant Agriculture
Today, the Institute for Self-Reliant Agriculture ("SRA"), a 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Washington state, is led by former Benson Institute directors, donors, and socially-conscious businessmen. They are united in the mission to bring self-sufficiency to poor people worldwide by teaching the integrated cropping approach to agriculture (grow what you eat - provide family nutrition first). But the "self-sufficiency first" aspect of the program is not the only thing that makes it unique. We also partner with local universities in the target regions and invite their senior students in agronomy, animal science and human nutrition to perform their thesis in our villages. For their participation we provide a stipend for their expenses. This relationship bears fruit in many ways: the students can do hands-on thesis research; the rural farms get free support from indigenous people; SRA gets to use the university labs; and our cost structure is dramatically reduced, allowing our donations to stretch even further and touch more lives.
