The concept that people with disabilities know their own needs best and have the right to make decisions regarding their daily lives defines the Independent Living Movement. Consumer or individual control gives them the power to make decisions that affect their lives, decide which services they want and the freedom to set their own goals. People with disabilities can do almost anything, sometimes they just have to do things differently.

A majority of SCIL's Board of Directors and staff have disabilities. This element of our organization gives a unique perspective of understanding for the needs of individuals with disabilities.

SCIL utilizes a Consumer Advisory Council consisting of consumers who share their opinions about what services people with disabilities want and need to achieve their goals of independence.
