Originally Sitka Electric Inc was started by Gordon J. Helem in 1971. G. Kenneth Helem purchased the company in 1991 and changed the name to Sitka Electric Company. Prior to purchasing the company, Ken was manager from 1982 until 1991. Sitka Electric incorporated as KenCare Inc. dba / Sitka Electric in 1997. Ken Helem is the president of the corporation and Carole Helem is vice president. Ken is responsible for the overall operations of the company while Carole is head of accounting and human resources.

Estimator / project managers include Doug Helem, Shawn Gillaspey, and Ron Conner. Jeff Helem is in charge of residential construction. Several of our key employees such as Shawn Gillaspey, Ron Conners and Doug and Jeff Helem have been with Sitka Electric for over fifteen years. Ken Helem has electrical administrator licenses for inside and outside wiring and communication, as well as an Alaska State Fire System Permit 1B. We also have an apprentice program through Avtec in Seward. Several of our electricians have goner through the apprenticeship program.

Ken moved to Alaska with his family in 1954 and attended all his pre-college schooling in Sitka. He graduated from Western Washington State College in 1972. Ken has been in electrical construction since 1972 when he started as an apprentice. He received his journeyman electrician card in 1976 and his Alaska Electrical Administrator license in 1978. Ken and Carole's children, Doug and Jeff are also involved with the business.

Sitka Electric Co. has between 15 and 20 employees depending on projects. We try to concentrate on larger projects, mostly in the public sector. Although generally a subcontractor, we do prime contract on projects that are primarily electrical in nature. As general contractor in we have completed Crescent Harbor Phase II for the City of Sitka, and Lake and Lincoln Traffic Signal for the State of Alaska, as well as several other State and local projects involving fire alarm and data installations. Sitka Electric's service department does residential, commercial and industrial service work. We maintain good relations with several large commercial businesses including grocery stores, fish processing plants, building supply stores and the City of Sitka.

With annual sales of between 2 and 5 million dollars, Sitka Electric is involved in several aspects of the electrical construction industry. Current projects include Blatchley Middle School Mechanical and Electrical Upgrades, Hoonah Marine Industrial Center PPhase III, Alaska Island Community Services Clinic in Wragell, and Haines SEARHC Clinic Upgrades. All those projects are with ASCR McGraw Construction. We are also working with CBC Construction on Japonski Island Lift Stations, S&S Construction on Mollar Park Base Ball Field Renovation, as well as doing projects in Thorne Bay and Metlakatla.

Sitka Electric also is involved in building environmental control installations, having worked with Honeywell Inc, SystemHouse Controls and ATS. Ron Conners is our estimator / project manager in controls.

Sitka Electric has worked state wide from Fort Knox Gold Mine in Fairbanks, Kodiak, Aleutian Islands, Cordova and all of Southeastern Alaska.
