A new business opened Wednesday, Aug. 25, on Humboldt's Sumner Avenue called Scatter Joy."
Joy Christensen has opened Scatter Joy in the Sheree's Hallmark building (626 Sumner Avenue), offering items "old to new and everything in between."
There's antiques, collectibles, purses, jewelry, Aroniaberry, flavored coffee, regular and decaf coffee, chi tea, daily treats and so much more. In the near future, she will carry health products and gluten free lines.
She's put the creative talents of her husband, Steve, to work making unique things out of what some people might think of as trash. For example, Steve has created baskets out of old fence wire. Steve and Joy's children are also contributing items such as Joe's paintings and John's steel creations. There are turtles made out of hubcaps (they're looking for old hubcaps), shelves made out of old doors, and more.
Joy is also taking items on consignment. She's also a recycler.
"If you have something you want to get rid of and you don't know what to do with it, instead of throwing it away, call me," Joy said.
A unique long, narrow flag will be used to display photos of deployed soldiers. Anyone with a loved one deployed is encouraged to bring in a photo to display with the flag.
Joy is a Humboldt native, graduating from Humboldt High School in 1971. She worked at Crest Pak for six years, the Humboldt liquor store for six years, then babysat for a time before opening "The Shop" on 1st Avenue South with her sister-in-law, Joyce Christensen. They closed The Shop later to raise their children.
Joy worked for Opportunity Village for 14 years. When Steve had an opportunity to build a Baptist Church in Hawaii, they spent a year there.
While in Hawaii, she actively collected sea glass and shells and plans to make it into jewelry. She said she enjoyed picking up unique pieces in Hawaii and when she returned, the opportunity to open a store made sense.
"Sheree (Eischen of Sheree's Hallmark) said she had room in the store and asked if I'd be interested in opening a shop. This is something I've always enjoyed," Joy said.
Steve and Joy have four grown children and eight grandchildren with one on the way in November. Steve is employed with the Corn LP ethanol plant in Goldfield.
"Steve has done so much. He did all the remodeling. He is so creative. He can take something that others think of as junk and make it into something special," Joy said.
Scatter Joy will be open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. To reach Joy, people can call (515) 368-1061.
