During the Ice Age, four major ice sheets covered northern Minnesota. When the glaciers withdrew, a lake formed between the height of the land to the south and the ice walls to the north. Known as Glacial Lake Agassiz, it submerged the county as well as part of the rest of Minnesota, North Dakota and a large portion of Canada. Eventually this lake shrank to leave the Lake of the Woods as a remnant body of water. The waters of the Lake of the Woods, like those of Lake Agassiz, flow north to empty into Hudson Bay. Lake of the Woods is the biggest lake in Minnesota hosting 14, 000 islands & 1 million acres of water stretching from Minnesota into Canada.Sportsman's LodgeSportsman's has been known for many years for it's large A frame lodge and 21 cabins. In 1971 the Beckel family built the main lodge and purchased the cabins next door. The cabins used to be known as cabins from two resorts called Jesme's & Jones's Resort which were started in the 1940's & 50's. The resort was only ran as a summer resort for many years until the 1980's when the ice fishing craze began. In 1992 the Hennum family purchased the Sportsman's Lodge and made many changes to the lodge. They have added the gift shop and lobby, a conference & banquet facility, and remodeled the bar, dining and lodge rooms. The Hennum family has past the resort down to a second generation and has many more plans to continue the upgrades for future guests to enjoy. For more information on the Lake of the Woods area, please call us at (866) 533-8998, or click here to contact us online with a question or comment now.
