Hopes Refuge is a non profit startup in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Our Mission follows the old adage, “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, Teach a man to fish, you feed him for life.” This belief is the core of our mission. Hopes Refuge is a Christian founded start-up looking to build a shelter to temporarily house and educate Young Adults aging out of foster care, and homeless people, willing and able to work, a trade. Our Goal is to first get them off the street and give them a space they can call their own. This close community of learners to earners will live in a shared, dorm style, living environment and participate in training, provided through partnerships with local and municipal groups, for trades, life skills and ministry, to prepare them for living on their own.
Every year, according to National Foster Youth Institute, More than 23,000 children age out of foster care every year and 20% of them will instantly become homeless! Instantly! They further explain that only 1 of every 2, who age out, will have some form of gainful employment by age 24.
As for the homeless, in Philadelphia alone, there are almost 6,000 homeless a night, and roughly 14,000 in Pennsylvania alone and total 553,000 across the USA.
Our Goals:
Shelter and Educate:
Our primary goal is to to create a dorm style living environment for those in need and provide Trade career and life skill training. We are focusing on Foster children and homeless age 18+ until they complete their chosen trade course and complete 6 months of employment (we estimate a one to one and a half years stay per member.) During this time they will engage in not only their chosen trade training but also engage in weekly mandatory life skill classes and optional life group ministries. After 6 months of employment we will assist with finding a more permanent housing for them, thus opening a room for another member.
Neighborhood Beautification & Outreach:
We are targeting large commercial abandoned buildings to rebuild and house our communities. These rebuilt spaces will remove community eyesores, and potentially dangerous locations from the area. As part of our life skills training, We will encourage our residents to participate as a member of the community through regularly scheduled, and mandatory, community outreach programs.
