Canoe Country Electric was established by Bill and Shirley Ronn in the mid 1980's when Bill retired from Reserve Mining Company after many years as and electrician. Bill served an apprenticeship to become and electician working in every phase of the mining process. During this time, he met and helped train another apprentice electrician by the name of Ken Hegman and this began a life long friendship. The Ronn's raised four children in the Ely area and the Hegman's raised four children in the Ely area. Both families were unwilling to leave during the hard times when jobs were scarce. Many fishing trips, hunting trips, and other adventures (including shack building) were done together for over 40 years (that is a large number). When Bill decided "enough was enough" and decided to retire completely and spend the cold months playing golf, Kenny was there with him, but Kenny's wife Cheryl said "You are not done yet." So buying Canoe Country Electric was his way out of the Municipal way of working and into the private sector where he will strive to keep the electric company, the fine business that Bill and Shirley made it into. Bill will never completely retire, we all know that, but there will always be a spot for his expertise and his faithful companion "Lightning" in the workings of Canoe Country Electric, Hegman style.
