Founded in 1998 in Atlanta, Georgia Rehabilitation Outreach (GRO) is a dynamic, community-based organization which provides cutting-edge, comprehensive and consistent behavioral health services to men and women living on the fringes of life.
Those who suffer the debilitating effects of mental illness and chronic homelessness represent GRO's client base. And in major urban areas like Atlanta, their numbers are growing.
"We saw an increasing need to provide critical services for people with these types of issues, which were not being addressed at traditional mental health centers," says Shirley Hamilton, who launched GRO and now serves as its chief executive officer. "The people we often see pushing grocery carts down the street are the people who come to us. We give them the services they need and help them reach the point of living self sufficiently."
Georgia Rehabilitation Services provides four primary programs: Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR), the Community Support Team (CST), and Residential Supports. These programs comprise a comprehensive platform of services that include diagnostic assessment and evaluation, medication management and education, housing, substance abuse education, individual and group counseling, employment assistance and vocational training, and life skills training such as money management and use of public transportation.
The goal, each and every day, is to reach men and women with little hope of being noticed by others.
"We specialize in working with the hardest to reach people in metro Atlanta, many of whom have serious persistent mental illness, drug problems or are homeless. These people come to us with nothing," she says.
The accomplishments of Georgia Rehabilitation Outreach are impressive because they directly contribute to the self-sufficiency and community integration of the men and women we serve.
**GRO initiated the most successful Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) program in Georgia.
**GRO launched the first-ever Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) program in Georgia.
**GRO demonstrated a $1.1 million savings to jails, psychiatric hospitals and shelters in a single year.
**GRO reduced psychiatric hospital admissions and criminal arrests by more than 75 percent.
**GRO acquired an Atlanta apartment community for the housing of chronically homeless men and women.
Everyone at GRO shares common values that we know must be held: the dignity and worth of all men and women we serve... total excellence in our service delivery... competent and dedicated employees... legal compliance... complete integrity in business practices... and meaningful community interaction. These values steer GRO each hour of the day, enabling us to provide hope and health to an ever-growing client population.
Georgia Rehabilitation Outreach receives consistently strong ratings from national accreditation bodies and also enjoys the privilege of outstanding partnerships in the Atlanta region which include:
**Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities
**Georgia Department of Community Affairs
**United Way Atlanta, Regional Commission on Homelessness
**Atlanta Development Authority
**U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
**Victory World Church
No simple answer exists for the mentally ill and the chronically homeless. Georgia Rehabilitation Outreach knows this. That's why our services are comprehensive, clinically-sound and compassionate. And that's why we hope they will continue to work.
