History of Our Style and School
We have created a style that benefits all people regardless of age or ability. We teach Kenpo, a style of martial arts that focuses on self-defense which can be used for real life application. We have also added the traditional Japanese style of Goshin Jitsu karate. Goshin Jitsu by definition means, "to the way of self defense" and also brings together many techniques that can be used in real world situations. Kenp? is a modern term describing one of the more innovative martial arts practiced in Hawaii and the Americas. It employs linear as well as circular moves, utilizing intermittent power when and where needed, interspersed with minor and major moves that flow with continuity. Kenp? is flexible in thought and action so as to blend with encounters as they occur. Ed Parker founded this style while he was only a brown belt.
Our head instructor, Jim Bacon, trained under one of Parker's direct students, Master Connor. Master Connor recognized Sensei Jim for his tremendous talent and drive to achieve his full potential. Sensei Jim also trained under Master Ray Fisher. Master Fisher advised him that he was one of the hand picked few that were chosen to open up a martial arts school. Being considered and thought of in this way was a true honor. Sensei Jim has been able to accomplish this goal and dream that he has had since he began training in the arts. All of us at the Family Martial Arts Center hope to continue the joy that martial arts brings to the world today.
The Kenpo creed;"I come to you with only "KARATE"-empty hands. I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles or my honor; should it be a matter of life or
death, of right or wrong; then here are my weapons - "KARATE" - my empty hands."This creed shows the amount of respect students of the martial arts consistently demonstrate and are expected to maintain. Kenpo is a Chinese style that uses many self-defense techniques in circular movements. Sensei Jim has taken the traditional Japanese style of Goshin Jitsu and added it to our curriculum. He believes that combining the styles of the Chinese and Japanese arts will develop a style of martial arts that is powerful, effective and useful in everyday life. All students of the martial arts are training for the same goals and reasons. We should all strive to work together, to help each other succeed and reach our full potential. Karate is not a hobby; it is a way of life.
