The Capital Region Maritime Center began as a concept in June 1992. First called “Operation Seagull,” named for one of its inspirational forces, Gary Seigel, then Executive Director of Catholic Charities Developmental Disabilities Services of Albany; it then became the Maritime Center. In April 1994, the vision of the organizers became a reality and the name was officially and finally changed to The Capital Region Maritime Center, Inc.
The dream of building a Center along the Mohawk River was achieved in great part through the goodwill of one of CRMC’s founders, Schenectady philanthropist Stanley Kivort, President/Owner of Kivort Steel Company, who donated the land for the facility, and many others whose time and generosity have made it possible.
The Center was constructed with funds from a HUD guaranteed loan, and was a collaborative effort involving CRMC, the Town of Glenville, Catholic Charities and the Capital Region Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES). The building was dedicated on May 18, 2001. BOCES’ Capital Region Maritime Academy made the Center its home from 2001 through 2011.
