The Caldwell Family Farm was established in 1944 by Lawrence and Hilda Caldwell when Lawrence Jr. and Ralph were small children. The farm is now managed by Ralph, his wife Sandra and daughter Deedee. In addition, third and fourth generation family members, several longtime employees, along with Lawrence, who is still actively involved at age 89, help to operate the farm as well.
The farm was MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association) certified for organic milk production in the spring of 1999 and certified for organic beef production in 2000. The milk is being sold to Horizon Dairy and Marketed under the Vermont Organic Cow Label. It is available in glass bottles under the Caldwell Family Farm label. The beef is being marketed at several health food stores, Co-ops, some restaurants, and locally.
In the spring of 2000, we decided to enter the organic and natural beef business as a supplement to our milk production in part to better utilize the transition feed that was being raised and to make room for more family involvement. We raised a number of calves in the summer of 2000 for this organic operation as well as purchased about 125 young stock from local natural small farms in our area. We supplemented their grazing with our transitional feed and locally grown non-gmo grains. This beef was raised using organic methods.
Today's health conscious consumers need the reassurance that their beef is being raised in a safe, humane manner without the addition of growth hormones or antibiotics to the animal and without the addition of pesticides and herbicides to its feed. Caldwell Farms stands behind this philosophy.
