When I was a kid, my sisters and I spent a lot of time in the family car traveling from coast to coast--east to west and back again. My father was in the military, and whenever he received his orders we would pack the car and follow him to wherever he was being stationed. My parents would drive nonstop across the country, but sometimes I would wake up to find our car on the side of the road and my father and mother napping. Then, I would take out my trusty flashlight to finish the last pages in the book I had been reading. In the evenings on those trips across the plains or the desert or the mountains, I relied on books to keep me company. I had two sisters and my parents to help me from getting bored, but reading books fulfilled a deep solitary need. This need has not diminished in the years since those trips.
I majored in English literature at UCLA because of books, and I earned a Master of Arts to ensure that, in my professional life as an English teacher, books and I would be inseparable. I couldn't go wrong if books were the reason I was in the classroom.
In my first few years of teaching at a private school for girls and at community colleges in Southern California, my syllabi included books that had excited, inspired, and transformed me during my college years. In my classes, I experimented with different ways of
