Profile 1975 to present
Automata has technical expertise. Historically, Lenny Feuer, an Electrical Engineering graduate from UC Berkeley, began Automata in 1975 with radio telemetry products, primarily for the flood warning market. This line of equipment continued to sell nationwide and in the United States as well as several other countries until about 1986. The product was developed with some cooperation from the National Weather Service. By this time the market size had grown to about 10 million dollars annually with increasing competition. We had other products prepared to market and gradually shifted away from the flood warning business. In the mid 1980's, we set out to develop a low cost, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system suitable for low-end industrial applications, as well as for agricultural applications.
Automata manufactures complete systems solutions including telemetry, software, and sensors used in a wide variety of light industrial and agricultural applications. We offer satellite, hard wire, narrow band radio, spread spectrum radio, telephone, and fiber optic communications to suit a wide range of environments. These award-winning products are proven management tools in canal automation, agriculture, bioremediation, flood warning, irrigation, pump and well water supply systems.
In addition to on-staff technical expertise, we also have on-staff agricultural expertise and also cooperate with several universities. Lenny Feuer, President and Chief Engineer, has wheat-farming experience; Jon Carlson, Electronics Technician, has rice-farming experience and Mary Ann Townsend, has integrated pest management experience with a biology degree. Eight of Automata's products have been given awards from "Agricultural Engineering" & "Resource" magazines (the official American Society of Agricultural Engineers publications) as being one of the fifty most outstanding innovations in agricultural product or systems technology developed during the year.
More recent products have become more network oriented. In the last few years several significant network oriented products have been developed.
A fully automated canal control system has been developed as a result of a cooperative development effort including USDA-ARS and Automata. The system is currently under test at a water district in Arizona. With a minimal initialization after installation this system is designed to fully automate a canal.
Internet application server software has been developed in cooperation with a group of growers in Oregon for collecting weather and other field data and running models and various programs to minimize pesticide use, water use, and in general optimize the farming operation. This system is designed as a large subscriber network accessible over the Internet.
Automata's MINI-SAT Field Station has been designed to be an economical and efficient tool to monitor/control data from the comfort of the office/home computer. The MINI-SAT Field Station uses Satellite Telemetry and is designed to be used in remote areas using a Solar Panel as the power source.
Automata will continue to be responsive to our valued customers and future products will continue to be based on the market needs.
